#1: See ‘War Stories’ and Permanent Collection Exhibit at the Memorial Art Gallery
This is the last weekend to see the two complementary exhibits which examine the narratives of war— Afghan War Rugs and War Memoranda close on Sunday, October 16, at the Memorial Art Gallery. While you’re at the museum, visit the new exhibit Courtly Pleasures: Indian Miniature Paintings from the Permanent Collection, which is now on view through December 24 The showcase of more than 30 Indian miniature paintings date from the early 16th to the late 19th centuries—a period of history in which the arts thrived under the patronage of India’s many royal courts. Some of the paintings are rich in narrative, drawn from well-known literary sources or sacred texts, while others focus on the spiritual. Admission and museum hours online.
#2: Last Call for ‘Red Ryder’ Drama
The Obie Award-winning drama, When You Comin’ Back, Red Ryder? comes to a close this weekend with performances on October 13, 14, and 15. Featuring a cast of University students, the story centers around the people who frequent a small town diner and what happens after two unexpected fugitives enter the scene. The play, which is recommended for adult audiences only, is directed by Nigel Maister and the set and costume design is by Marsha Ginsberg. Shows start at 7 p.m., at Todd Theatre. Tickets are $12 for alumni, faculty, staff, and for seniors (65+), and $15 for the general public. Purchase online.
#3: Watch Soccer Games at Fauver Stadium
The men’s and women’s soccer teams host games on Rochester turf this weekend. The outdoor matches pair the Yellowjackets with the Carnegie Mellon Tartans on Friday, October 14. The women’s game starts at 5 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30 p.m. The soccer teams closes out the weekend with matches against Case Western Reserve at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Sunday, October 16. All games take place at Fauver Stadium on the River Campus. Admission is free. uofrathletics.com.
#4: Philharmonia Performs Beethoven and Chopin
The Eastman Philharmonia will perform at Kodak Hall on Friday, October 14. Comprised of upperclassmen and graduate student instrumentalists from the Eastman School of Music, the ensemble performs Beethoven’s Overture to Fidelio, Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2, and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade. Neil Varon conducts. The performance is free and begins at 8 p.m., at Eastman Theatre.
#5: Make It an Outdoor Movie Night
College Town will host a free outdoor screening of the 90s classic Halloween film Hocus Pocus on Saturday, October 15. Make it a family night and pick up free popcorn and cotton candy for movie-goers starting at 6:30 p.m., at the green space area between Celebration Drive and Mt. Hope Avenue.
