#1: Get out for hockey night in Rochester

Head downtown to the Blue Cross Arena for University of Rochester Night at Amerks Hockey on Friday, February 24. The Rochester Americans will take on the Syracuse Crunch at 7:05 p.m. Before the game, from 6 to 7 p.m, $2 beers will be sold in the Hall of Fame area and a student band will provide entertainment. Eastman vocalists will lead the national anthem, the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps will present the colors, and a cappella groups from the University will perform “God Bless America.” River Campus student tickets are $8 and are sold at the Common Market in Wilson Commons. Eastman School of Music student tickets are $2, available at the Eastman Office of Student Life; and tickets for faculty, staff, alumni, and graduate students cost $12 and are sold online. #2: Hear classical repertoire at Strong Auditorium

The Symphony Orchestra will take the stage of Strong Auditorium on Saturday, February 25, in what will be conductor David Harman’s penultimate concert. The orchestra—with 100 members—is comprised of undergraduate and graduate students, as well as community musicians from the greater Rochester area.  The ensemble will perform “Concerto for Violin in G Minor opus 26” by Max Bruch, a piece that will feature 2016 Concerto Competition winner Khang Huynh, a Biomedical engineering graduate student. The evening repertoire also includes “Symphony No. 5″  by Dmitri Shostakovish; and “Short Ride in a Fast Machine” by John Adams, an acclaimed composer who will be artist-in-residence next academic year. The concert is free and begins at 8 p.m. Harman’s final performance with the Symphony Orchestra is April 13.

#3: Experience renowned Eastman faculty performances

Eastman School of Music’s Faculty Artist Series will feature Eastman Virtuosi on Saturday, February 25. Listen to renowned faculty performers at Kilbourn Hall including Jim Thompson, professor of trumpet; Larry Zalkind, professor of trombone; Anthony Dean Griffey, professor of voice; Michael Burritt, professor of percussion; W. Peter Kurau, professor of horn; and Jeff Campbell, professor of jazz studies and contemporary media. Bonita Boyd, professor of flute, and Nicholas Goluses, professor of guitar, are artistic codirectors of the ensemble. The two-hour performance features four pieces by Jacques Castérède, John Dowland, Michael Burritt and Robert Honstein, and Doug Hill. Tickets are free for University of Rochester ID holders. #4: Celebrate Black History Month Family Day at the Memorial Art Gallery

The Memorial Art Gallery will host its annual celebration of Black history, culture, and art on Sunday, February 26, from noon to 5 p.m. The family-friendly event includes hands-on art activities, community display tables, Caribbean drumming by youth from Sojourner House’s Dreamseeds program, and exhibition of art by the student winners of the “What Does Black Lives Matter Mean to You?” art contest. The event also feature live music by the Jimmie Highsmith Jr. Band, tours of the exhibition Meleko Mokgosi: Pax Kaffraria, and “Family Fitness Fun Zumba,” with Pearls Physique. #5: Dance to the sounds of Mr. Carmack

Do you like eclectic dance grooves? Then get your tickets to Mr. Carmack’s performance on Saturday, February 25. A DJ, writer, and producer, Mr. Carmack—a.k.a. Aaron Carmack—is a Hawaii-based artist who “blurs the distinction between hip hop and dance music.” The contemporary artist, with a best-selling album on Bandcamp, has toured cities around the world, performing alongside artists such as Diplo, Cashmere Cat, and Hudson Mohawke. The concert is sponsored by the Student Programming Board. The event starts at 8 p.m., in Douglas Ballroom. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available online or at the Common Market in Wilson Commons.
