19 University students among Fulbright semifinalists

Fulbright logoNineteen University students are semifinalists for the 2017-18 Fulbright U.S. Student Grant program.

The competition is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and is designed to promote mutual understanding and peace between the United States and other nations through educational and cultural exchange. It offers college graduates the chance to pursue advanced studies, conduct research, and teach English language and U.S. culture abroad.

Forty undergraduates, graduate students, and recent alumni applied for the Fulbright last fall through the River Campus and Eastman School of Music Fulbright committees.

Final winners will be announced over the next several weeks by country.

The University semifinalists, with their majors and the country they’ve applied to, are:

  • Michael Gilbert ’17 (biochemistry) Hong Kong
  • Ellen Kim ’17 (health, behavior & society) South Korea
  • Miriam Kohn ’17 (linguistics) Laos
  • Minsoo Lee ’16 (electrical & computer engineering) UK
  • Dovas Lietuvninkas ’16 (applied music-trumpet/music education) Lithuania
  • Julianne McAdams ’17 (creative writing) Germany
  • Robert Parent ’17 (Russian) Germany
  • Casey Silver ’18G (School of Medicine and Dentistry) India
  • Khamai Simpson ’17 (German/health, behavior & society) Germany
