Jeanette Colby, the University’s calendar editor, offers a selection of events and activities to do this weekend. The calendar features a variety of events at all campuses, including the River Campus, Eastman School of Music, Memorial Art Gallery, and Medical Center.

#1: Hear a Friday afternoon recital by world-renowned ensemble

The Jupiter String Quartet will present a free recital at the Eastman School of Music’s Hatch Recital Hall on Friday, March 8. The program is part of the James E. Clark Chamber Music Residency to provide Eastman students with intense and up-close exposure to world-renowned ensembles. The ensemble will perform Stravinsky’s “Three Pieces for String Quartet,” Dutilleux’s “Ainsi La Nuit,” and Medelssohn’s “Quartet in A Minor.” There will be a Q&A with the audience following the recital. The recital starts at noon and is free and open to the public.

#2: Attend Game of Thrones–inspired event

The Memorial Art Gallery will host “A Feast for Crows” on Friday, March 8. The Game of Thrones–inspired social event features $5 food specials from Brown Hound Downtown, mead on tap from OSB Ciderworks, and live music by DJ A-Live. Take part in GOT trivia, art-making, costume contest, and giveaways. $5 a person and all ages are welcome. Purchase tickets online.

#3: Take the family to the ‘Silly Symphony’ Celebration

The Eastman Presents series features “Disney in Concert: A Silly Symphony Celebration with Eastman Studio Orchestra” on Friday, March 8. Concert-goers will hear a celebration of the groundbreaking Academy Award–winning cartoons produced at Walt Disney Studios between 1929 and 1939. The animated films return to the big screen accompanied by their original musical scores performed by Eastman Studio Orchestra. The program includes “The Skeleton Dance,” “Three Little Pigs,” “The Country Cousin,” and “The Ugly Duckling.” The ensemble is conducted by Mark Watters. Arrive at 6:30 p.m. for face painting, and instrument petting zoo. Come dressed as your favorite Disney character. Tickets are $31-$61, with $10 tickets for children, and can be purchased online. Discounts are available with a University ID.

 

#4: Try out an art class

Learn about spring art classes for all ages at the Spring Creative Workshop Open House, from 1 to 4 p.m., at the Memorial Art Gallery on Saturday, March 9. Bring family and friends for hands-on art activities, demonstrations, and opportunities to talk with teaching artists. Enjoy supervised art activities for ages 4 to 12. Get a $5 discount on classes when registering at the event. The creative workshop is located on the lower level of the museum. The open house is free and open to all.

#5: Check out music school showcase

The Eastman Community Music School will present a student showcase recital on Sunday March 10. The recitals are performances by students of all ages, and all instruments. The event is an opportunity for young musicians to demonstrate their hard work and achievements to friends, family, and the community. The recitals take place at Eastman School of Music’s Hatch Recital Hall, from 3:30 to 4:30 and are free and open to the public.
