Jeanette Colby, the University’s calendar editor, offers a selection of events and activities to do this weekend. The calendar features a variety of events at all campuses, including the River Campus, Eastman School of Music, Memorial Art Gallery, and Medical Center.

#1: Enjoy wind ensembles performance

The Eastman Wind Orchestra and Eastman Wind Ensemble will present a free program on Friday, October 18. The program, led by conductor Mark Davis Scatterday, will feature Stephen Goss’s “Concerto of Couleurs” with guitarist Nicholas Goluses; David Liptak’s “The Sacred Harp” and Gustav Holst’s “A Summer Rhapsody.” Both orchestras feature student performers from the Eastman School of Music. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre.

#2: Learn about audio music engineering

Interested in audio engineering? The Department of Electrical Engineering and the Audio and Music Engineering Society will host a discussion on Saturday, October 19, with Grammy award-winning recording engineer Leslie Ann Jones about her career and life in the industry. The daughter of musician and bandleader Spike Jones, Leslie was immersed in the Los Angeles TV and music scene her entire life. She talks about her 20-year career as an audio engineer and her current work as director of music recording and scoring at Skywalker Sound—where she records orchestral scores, mixes film and video elements, and records and produces music albums. Jones has produced numerous albums, for artists such as Rosemary Clooney, the Kronos Quartet, as well as Carlos Santana, and Bobby McFerrin. The talk begins at 4:15 p.m., in Wegmans Hall on the River Campus, and is free and open to the public.

#3: Celebrate Hispanic art, culture

The Memorial Art Gallery hosts its annual celebration of culture at the Hispanic Heritage Celebration on Sunday, October 20. The annual event offers Rochester area families a chance to learn more about culture through the arts. There will be hands-on art activities for kids of all ages, music and dance demonstrations, storytelling, and cultural displays. The celebration includes lives performances by the Borinquen Dance Theater, drumming ensemble Bata Con Pie, and Grupo Cultural de Rochester. This year, the spotlight country is Venezuela. The event is free; suggested donation of $5 per group. The event is from noon to 5 p.m.


#4: Hear choral compositions of Rosephayne Powell

The sounds of choral music will fill Kilbourn Hall on Saturday, October 19, as the Repertory Singers, Women’s Chorus, and Eastman Chorale perform a joint concert performance. The concert will feature original works and arrangements by guest composer Rosephayne Powell—hailed as the most performed and published African American woman composer of choral music internationally.  “Musicians in the Women’s Chorus learn to see the world through the eyes and ears of composers whose works they perform. Bringing Powell here to conduct a concert of her works offers students a rare opportunity to connect personally with her perspective,” notes Phlilp Silvey, an associate professor of music education and chair of the Department of Music Teaching and Learning at the the Eastman School of Music. In addition, the program includes classical works by Brahms, Mozart, and Mendelssohn. Performance conductors also include Noemi Binag, Caleb Hopkins, and William Weinert. The free performance begins at 3 p.m. in Kilbourn Hall.

#5: Watch Aladdin for free on the River Campus

The Cinema Group offers a free screening of the 2019 live version of the classic Disney film Aladdin on Saturday, October 19. The film, directed and cowritten by Guy Ritchie, follows the adventures of Aladdin and Princess Jasmine, played by Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott, respectively, who befriend the wish-granting Genie, played by Will Smith. Film screenings begin at 6:30 p.m., 9:30 p.m., and midnight at the Hoyt Hall Auditorium on the River Campus.
