Jeanette Colby, the University’s calendar editor, offers a selection of Halloween-themed events and activities to do this weekend. The calendar features a variety of events at all campuses, including the River Campus, Eastman School of Music, Memorial Art Gallery, and Medical Center.
#1: Put on a costume and attend ‘Museum of the Dead’
The Memorial Art Gallery will host its Museum of the Dead 5 on Friday, October 25. Spend a spooky evening in the art museum enjoying art, music, and dancing. See Alphonse Mucha: Master of Art Nouveau now on view at the museum. The 21-and-over event features music by DJ A-Live, fortune-telling, craft-making, and conversations with Monroe County Paranormal Investigations. Hear Baroque organ music in the Fountain Court and take pictures in the photo booth with John Schlia Photography. There will be food available for purchase from Brown Hound Downtown and tastings by Iron Smoke Whiskey and Hedonist Artisan Chocolates. Costumes are strongly encouraged and will be rewarded. Enjoy giveaways from Nox, Salena’s Mexican Restaurant, the Little Theatre, and Urban Decay Cosmetics. The event is from 8 to 11 p.m. and tickets are $20 online and $25 at the door.
#2: Experience a Halloween-themed brass concert
The University’s Brass Choir will present its annual Halloween-themed music event, “Spooktacular,” on Saturday, October 26. Led by Bill Tiberio, who also performs on the sax, the brass ensemble features a rock rhythm section that includes alumnus Will Keefer on drums. Hear a lively and spooky program of music, including Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and the classic Commodores disco hit, “Brick House.” The program will also include an arrangement by trombonist Gene Kim. Costumes are encouraged and tickets are not required to attend this family-friendly free event. The concert begins at 8 p.m. in Strong Auditorium.
#3: Get the kids into ‘spooky’ science
The Society of Physics Students will hosts its annual Halloween-themed “Spooky Science Day” from 1 to 4:30 on Saturday, October 26. Drop by Rettner Hall on the River Campus with the kids for a celebration and afternoon of scientific demonstrations and Halloween fun. Get some candy and watch demos on electricity and magnetism as well as liquid nitrogen experiments. There will also be oobleck making, marshmallow towers, and LED monsters. The free event is geared toward elementary children, but all who are interested in science are welcome.
#4: Head to ‘Halloween Town’ with the family
College Town will host its annual Halloween Town on Sunday, October 27. The family-friendly event, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., features free cider, donuts, games, face-painting, and airbrushed tattoos. Trick-or-treating will happen from 11 to noon. Pick up trick-or-treat bags at the balloon archway. There will be a slime-making station, a photo booth, and a Balloon Mania Halloween archway. Barnes & Noble will offer story time. The first 300 kids will get free apples.
#5: Watch a scary movie
The student-run Cinema Group will screen a few scary movies this weekend. On Friday, October 25, see a screening of the 2019 horror flick Us—written and directed by Jordan Peel. Follow a family as they embark on a calming beach vacation but end up being terrorized by their doppelgangers. The movie stars Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, and Elisabeth Moss. Three times to watch the film at 6:30 p.m., 9:30 p.m. and midnight. On Saturday, October 26, see the horror classic film Psycho. The 1960 movie, directed and produced by Alfred Hitchcock, stars Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh and was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actress and Best Director. There is one screening at 9 p.m. Both movies are free and will be screened at the Hoyt Auditorium on the River Campus.
