In the role, Kipp Campbell will ensure the rights, welfare, and safety of all University research participants are protected.
Elizabeth Kipp Campbell, director of the Office of Research Ethics and Compliance at MaineHealth in Portland, Maine, has been appointed the University of Rochester’s associate vice president for human subject protection, effective March 1.
Reporting to the Vice President for Research, Kipp Campbell comes to Rochester to lead the Office for Human Subject Protection (OHSP), which ensures that the University protects the rights, welfare, and safety of all research participants. She will oversee a comprehensive human subject protection program for the entire institution in support of its mission in education, research, and patient care, and in compliance with applicable federal, state, and institutional regulations, guidelines, and policies. The position provides education, outreach, and training for the University research community regarding the OHSP, including determining when Institutional Review Board (IRB) review is necessary. The IRB ensures that ethical and safe research practices are used when research is conducted with human subjects.
“Dr. Kipp Campbell was selected following an extensive national search and brings exceptional passion to her work and extensive experience in the field of human subjects protection, having previously held leadership positions at a complex health organization, as well as at other R1 research institutions,” says Stephen Dewhurst, vice president for research. “She has outstanding leadership abilities and communication skills, so I’m very excited that she’s joining our University and will be helping to further enhance the University’s ability to engage in human subjects research that is ethical, collaborative, and dedicated to the highest standards.”
Kipp Campbell brings a wealth of academic and regulatory knowledge to this position with nearly 30 years of IRB experience in both the biomedical and non-biomedical areas. After earning a PhD in human development and family studies from Pennsylvania State University, she undertook a National Institutes of Health–funded postdoctoral fellowship in developmental disabilities at the University of Minnesota, and subsequently served as the IRB administrator at the Children’s Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota. She was then recruited to Purdue University to serve as the director of its Human Research Protection Program.
More recently, she served as director of the Office of Human Research Ethics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she oversaw the professional staff responsible for the support of six IRBs. In 2019, she joined MaineHealth’s Research Compliance Office, responsible for providing training and support to clinicians, faculty, and staff in regulatory requirements for scientific research.
Kipp Campbell additionally received a master’s degree in human development and family studies from Penn State, and a bachelor’s degree in human resources and family studies from the University of Illinois. She succeeds Kelley O’Donoghue in the role.
