WHAT: The Distinguished Visitor in the Humanities program brings eminent visiting scholars to the University to engage in public lectures, workshops, and other scholarly activities.
ABOUT EDWARD AYERS: A noted historian and the author of 10 books on American history, Edward L. Ayers has been president of the University of Richmond since 2007. He is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the National Humanities Medal awarded by President Obama at the White House in 2012. He has also won the Bancroft Prize for distinguished writing in American history and the Albert J. Beveridge Award for the best book in English on the history of the Americas since 1492, as well as being named a finalist for both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize.
Ayers’ digital archive project, The Valley of the Shadow: Two Communities in the American Civil War, has been used in thousands of classrooms around the world. He is a co-host of BackStory, a nationally syndicated radio show that ties history to the present day.
ADMISSION: The talk is free and open to the public. Metered parking is available along Wilson Boulevard. Visitor parking passes may be obtained from the River Campus Information Booth.
