Stuart V. Jordan has been appointed as the first faculty director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) at the University of Rochester. His appointment is effective July 1.
“Stu’s experience on the faculty and his innovative work in the classroom make him especially well-suited to take on this role in support of teaching excellence,” said Richard Feldman, dean of the College. “He will also help us achieve our long-term aspiration to build closer connections between faculty and the resources that CETL has to offer.”
“I know that faculty members here are passionate about their research work and their teaching,” Jordan said. “But those dual responsibilities leave them little time to develop innovative approaches to teaching. My job will be to provide some new teaching resources to help them build richer experiences for their students.”
Jordan will work at the Center with Executive Director Vicki Roth and Assistant Director Jenny Hadingham. The center currently sponsors faculty workshops, a consulting service, a mini-grant program, and resources to help design, teach, and evaluate courses. Jordan also will work with the Rochester Center for Community Leadership to help faculty create course components that foster student engagement with local business, non-profit, and government organizations. He has been a member of CETL’s Advisory Board since 2011.
Jordan received his doctorate in public affairs from Princeton University before he joined Rochester’s faculty as an assistant professor of political science in 2006. His research has focused on the interaction of the U.S. executive and judicial branches in the implementation of domestic policy. At Rochester, he has taught courses on the U.S. presidency, the analysis of arguments in political science, and mathematical modeling. He also directed the Washington Semester Program, which offers students the opportunity to work on the staff of a United States senator or representative while earning academic credit for the experience. Jordan will continue to teach in the department of political science.
