During his time at Rochester, Garewal led the development of the River Campus Libraries strategic plan and oversaw a library modernization project.

Kevin Garewal, vice provost and the Andrew H. & Janet Dayton Dean of the University of Rochester Libraries, has announced that he will step down from his roles effective July 31. Garewal is returning to his alma mater, Cleveland State University–College of Law, where he will serve as assistant professor and director of the law library.

“Kevin has led with a deep strategic vision and close attention to the remarkable professionals on the Libraries team,” says David Figlio, University of Rochester provost and the Gordon Fyfe Professor of Economics and Education. “Over the last two years, he has moved the libraries forward in very meaningful ways, and the fruits of his labors will be enjoyed by students, faculty, and staff for many years to come.”

During his time at Rochester, Garewal oversaw the development of the River Campus Libraries strategic plan, guided a full restoration and modernization of the Physics, Optics, and Astronomy Library in Bausch & Lomb Hall, and introduced a River Campus Libraries summer internship program to offer hands-on, experiential learning opportunities to undergraduate students from a wide range of majors and academic backgrounds.

“This is going home for me,” says Garewal. “This move is a chance to be closer to my family and to reconnect with Cleveland State. I have been so fortunate at Rochester to work with smart and dedicated colleagues at the libraries and across the University. I will miss each of them, but I know that the University of Rochester libraries are in good hands.”

Maurini Strub, assistant dean of strategy and planning for River Campus Libraries, will serve as interim dean while the University conducts a national search to find Garewal’s successor. Together with Garewal, Strub has been instrumental in developing the River Campus Libraries strategic plan.
