Nathan Deen, a seasoned attorney in the higher education environment, has been named deputy general counsel in the University of Rochester’s Office of Counsel. He comes to Rochester from Washington State University and has already begun in this new role, succeeding Rick Crummins who retired in July after 27 years of service.

Deen will serve as a key advisor to the University’s senior vice president and general counsel, Donna Gooden Payne, and will oversee a team of attorneys in providing legal advice and services to University administration on a wide variety of issues and projects, primarily affecting schools and divisions outside of the Medical Center.

“Nathan’s extensive experience, strong sense of collaboration, intelligence, ability to communicate with various stakeholders, and problem-solving abilities will help the Office of Counsel manage the complex issues that face our institution,” says Payne.

During his tenure at Washington State University, Deen served in roles of increasing responsibility, most recently as lead counsel for the institution as Division Chief of the Washington State Attorney General’s Office, Washington State University Division. He brings extensive experience in contractual, regulatory, student, employment, and litigation issues, and as division chief led a team of attorneys at a prominent research university with a medical school. The university includes six campuses with operating expenses exceeding $1.2 billion, and research expenditures nearing $380 million.

Deen holds a bachelor’s degree from Washington State University and is a graduate of Washington and Lee University School of Law in Lexington, Virginia, where he earned a juris doctor degree.
