Sam Borst-Smith wins State Farm “Assist Of The Year” competition

The University of Rochester’s Sam Borst-Smith (San Pedro, CA/Peninsula HS) has won the 2016 State Farm Assist of the Year competition.  His intentionally missed free throw and assist along with the shot made by teammate Mack Montague at the end of UR’s February 7th overtime victory over the University of Chicago earned Borst-Smith the title.

CHICAGO (March 10, 2016) – Intersport, producers of the State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships, today announced that the University of Rochester’s Sam Borst-Smith has won the State Farm “Assist of the Year” competition. Borst-Smith will attend the 2016 Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships on March 31 in Houston where his assist play will be featured during the event.

This is the first time that State Farm has bestowed an “Assist of the Year” honor in college basketball. Fans determined the winner by entering the State Farm “Assist of the Year” web site (http://www.assistoftheyear.com) and voting daily throughout the competition.

The State Farm “Assist of the Year” contest is a digital media contest that featured 16 top assist plays, over four rounds, with each round featuring four plays. The winner of each round advanced to the final round. Michigan State’s Denzel Valentine, Kentucky’s Tyler Ulis, Rochester’s Sam Borst-Smith and Academy of Art’s Regina Camera all advanced to the finals. Borst-Smith ultimately emerged from the final round as the “Assist of the Year” champion. A complete recap of each round and every assist play can be found on the “Assist of the Year” web site.

The State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships feature the best college dunkers and 3-point shooters in the country and is held annually in the Final Four host city. The 28th annual event will air live from Berry Center in Cypress, Texas on ESPN during Final Four weekend at 9 p.m. ET on March 31.
