Summer carillon series brings internationally acclaimed performers to Rochester

The University will begin its annual summer carillon series on Monday, July 6, with a performance from award-winning carillonneur Joey Brink. The concert is the first of four free outdoor shows that will take place during the month of July on Monday evenings at 7 p.m. on the Eastman Quad on River Campus.

Danny Wegman elected University board chair-elect, four new trustees named at May meeting

The University Board of Trustees elected Rochester business and civic leader Danny Wegman as board chairman-elect at its May meeting, to begin a five-year term following the May 2016 Board meeting. Wegman, CEO of Rochester-based Wegmans Food Markets, Inc., has served as a University trustee for more than 15 years.

Generating broadband terahertz radiation from a microplasma in air

Researchers in the Institute of Optics have shown that a microplasma created by focusing intense laser pulses in air emits not only visible light, but also electromagnetic pulses at terahertz frequencies that can be used to detect complex molecules, such as explosives and drugs.

New app would monitor mental health through “selfie” videos, social media

In a paper to be presented this week at the American Association for Artificial Intelligence conference in Austin, Texas, computer science professor Jiebo Luo and his colleagues describe a computer program that can analyze “selfie” videos recorded by a webcam as the person engages with social media.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder: International Theatre Program presents Venus

The play opens in Todd Theatre on Thursday, Dec. 4, and is based on the true story of Saartijie Baartman, a South African woman taken from her home in 1810 and brought to London where she becomes an overnight sensation on the freak-show circuit.

University ranked among top ten ‘Best Colleges for Food’

The University’s dining services has been ranked 6th on the 2014 list of 75 Best Colleges for Food by the online publication The Daily Meal. In addition to the quality of the food, the rankings were determined by the “food scene of the surrounding area,” as well as nutrition, sustainability, accessibility, events, uniqueness, and “the overall quality of the dining experience.”
