Rochester top college destination for African leadership students

The University ranks as the number one destination for graduates of the African Leadership Academy (ALA), a selective college preparatory program in South Africa. Last week the University hosted the academy’s 4th annual indaba, meaning “gathering” in Zulu – the largest conference in North America for students who have graduated from ALA.

Rochester student selected for prestigious Fulbright Summer Institute

Sophomore Leah Schwartz ’17 will spend six weeks this summer studying as a US-UK Fulbright Summer Institute participant. The program selects approximately 50 early college students from the United States and United Kingdom to participate in the summer academic and cultural exchange program.

Experts on Brazil discuss the World Cup from a historical lens

As Brazil kicks off the World Cup, more than the tournament outcome is at stake, according to historians Pablo Sierra and Molly Ball of the University of Rochester. The husband-and-wife team have developed a course, “History of Latin America through Soccer,” that will be taught for the first time this fall at Rochester.

Rochester students to build community center in South Africa

This summer Rochester students John Dawson ’13/T5’14 and Katherine Wegman ’15, will spend two months in Cape Town, South Africa, building a new community center for residents of Egoli, a squatter community on the outskirts of Cape Town.

Experts to discuss crisis in Ukraine

Four faculty experts will discuss on Thursday, April 3, the Russian annexation of the Crimean peninsula and the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. The panel will touch on a variety of issues including Russian President Vladimir Putin’s objectives and speculation about his next moves. The panel also will explore political constraints, such as Europe’s dependency on Russian oil and reliance on exports to Russia.
