Tynelle Stewart is the new director of the Education Abroad program at the University of Rochester. She also will serve as an assistant dean.
The appointment was announced by College Dean Richard Feldman. Stewart will join the University of Rochester in early January.
“Tynelle brings energy, enthusiasm and experience to this highly important position,” Feldman said. “She is innovative, focused and eager to build on the strengths of the program to continue growing global opportunities for our students.”
Stewart, a Rush-Henrietta and Rochester Institute of Technology graduate, has been RIT’s director of study abroad and fellowships since 2007. In that role, she increased student participation 32 percent over the past five years.
She replaces Jacqueline Levine, the long-term leader of Education Abroad (formerly known as Study Abroad), who is taking on a new role within the College working with Advancement, with a particular focus on alumni who have studied abroad.
“I am so excited to be joining the University of Rochester, a globally-ranked research university which prioritizes international engagement,” said Stewart, a Rochester resident. “I look forward to working with the Education Abroad team, faculty, students and the university community to enhance already successful global education programs.”
About one-third of undergraduates at the University of Rochester study abroad, double the national average. At RIT, Stewart facilitated the program’s transition into an independent unit with budget allocation, full-time staffing and relocation to Global Village.
Under her direction, RIT’s Study Abroad program expanded to more than 600 students in 47 countries.
