Jeffrey Ball was presented with the 1999 American Nursery and Landscape Association's prestigious Garden Communicators Award at the ANLA's Philadelphia convention this past summer. The award is given to a gardening communicator who has made outstanding contributions to public appreciation of plants and landscaping over a substantial period of time. In addition to numerous gardening books, how-to videos, a gardening computer program, and appearances on home and garden shows all over the country, Ball served as the NBC Today Show's "gardening guy" for eight years.

Liz Geigle Ball debuted her Philadelphia Garden Book, published by Cool Springs Press, at the Philadelphia Flower Show last March. A how-to resource book for gardeners in the Philadelphia area, the book also features historical information. Author of the Smith & Hawken book Composting, Ball is a former high school teacher, now in her 10th year of freelance garden writing.

Carol Huested Aquino e-mails that she spent two weeks this summer in South Africa, where she vacationed and consulted on marketing and communications issues with the Community Chest of the Western Cape in Cape Town and the Ubuntu Community Chest in Durban. Vice president of communications for United Way and Community Chest in Cincinnati, Aquino met in September with a delegation of officials from Beijing, who were visiting Cincinnati on a tour of various cities to learn more about different social service systems. A self-proclaimed "rabid Dodgers fan," Aquino wrote a guest column for the Cincinnati Enquirer on the death of PeeWee Reese and his role in aiding Jackie Robinson's entry into major-league baseball. She also reports that her son, Neil, is selling books and writing poetry in Houston.

Bette Silverblatt Hirsh was named chair of the advisory committee for foreign languages and literature by the Modern Language Association for the 1999-2000 academic year. . . . Barry Meyer has been named chairman and chief executive officer of entertainment giant Warner Bros. He had been serving as executive vice president and chief operating officer for the famed studio.

Dorothy Cohen Goldstein '66W writes: "After 30 years of teaching, I am pleased to announce my retirement from the Baldwin-Whitehall School District in Pittsburgh.". . . Bruce Sales '71 (PhD), professor of psychology, psychiatry, sociology, and law at the University of Arizona, was awarded the Doctor of Science degree (honoris causa) by John Jay College of Criminal Justice of the City University of New York for his contributions to the field of forensic psychology as an academic discipline and program. Sales also is the recipient of the Award for Distinguished Professional Public Service from the American Psychological Association and the Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology and Law from the American Psychology-Law Society. Additionally, he is an elected member of the American Law Institute and the editor of the journal Psychology, Public Policy, and Law.

Mariana Marcovici Grinblat has been named president-elect of the Occupational Hygienists Association of Ontario, Canada. She is a labor affairs officer with the federal government's labor department in Ontario. . . . Kenneth Janette '68S (MBA) has been named the chief financial officer for Protegrity, Inc., headquartered in Stamford, Conn. The company is a privately held provider of database encryption technology.

Ruth Brim Balser (see Alumni Gazette, The Psychologist in the House). . . . Jay Stetzer '77E (Mas) is a performer, storyteller, and teacher of performing arts at the Harley School in Rochester.
