CHURCH AND POLITICS STUDIED IN THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY

How does Christianity promote the political activism of African-Americans?

In his 1999 book, Something Within: Religion in African-American Political Activism, political scientist Fredrick C. Harris has provided some answers.

Going beyond the religion- as-opiate debate that has dominated research on the subject, Harris illustrates through statistical data and telling anecdotes the importance of the church in the politics of the African-American community.

Harris, who is director of the University's Center for the Study of African-American Politics, has been singled out three times for honors since the book's publication,

In November he received the 2000 V. O. Key Award from the Southern Political Science Association. Earlier he had received both the 1999 Outstanding Book Award from the National Conference of Black Political Scientists and the 2000 Distinguished Book Award from the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion. Harris is the first political scientist to receive the society's award.
