SPRING WRAP-UP

The women's lacrosse team won its first-ever New York State championship, earning an inaugural appearance in the Eastern College Athletic Conference playoffs.

Setting a single-season record for victories, the 14-4 Yellowjackets were driven by a veteran lineup that included six starters from the Class of '02. The Yellowjackets began the season quickly, winning their first nine games and climbing to a No. 14 ranking in the Division III poll.

Jenny Rogers '02 set a single-season scoring record with 34 goals and 43 assists (also a single-season record). Rogers scored the game-winning goal in sudden-death overtime against Ithaca College to win the New York State title. She was named Most Valuable Player at the state playoffs and also Regional All-American and First Team All-UCAA.

When Rogers passed the ball, one of her favorite targets was Jessica Lerman '02. Lerman finished with 43 goals and seven assists. Like Rogers, she earned Regional All-America honors and First Team All-UCAA accolades. Lerman and Rogers are among Rochester's career scoring leaders.

Jen Seferiadis '02 was a strong presence in the defense and showed offensive skills by tallying 32 goals. The other seniors were midfielders Erika Bergstrom (19 goals) and Lauren Mele (17 goals) in midfield and Cassie Meltzer on defense.

Women's Tennis: Rochester climbed to the No. 20 spot in the Division III national rankings and competed in the NCAA Division III national championships for the second time in three years. The Yellowjackets were 13-5 for the season after a 7-2 loss to second-seeded Tufts University in the NCAAs.

Joanna Toke '03 was selected as an individual to the NCAA championships in singles and doubles. Seeded eighth in a field of 32 in singles, Toke advanced to the quarterfinals before losing in a rematch of the 2001 NCAA national championship match. In doubles, Toke and Rachel Sandler '02 were beaten in the first round.

Men's Tennis: Rochester capped off its season by winning the UCAA championship. The Yellowjackets were 12-3 against Division III opponents in the spring. Chris O'Brien '94 was named the UCAA Coach of the Year, and Colin Ryan '04 was named the UCAA Player of the Year.

Softball: The softball team claimed its first bid to the New York State championships, a trip that ended in a 5-4 loss to St. Lawrence, the eventual state champ. The 13-23 Yellowjackets had six players earn All-UCAA honors. Sara Dial '04, Becky Ryszkiewicz '04, and Kristin Maloney '05 were named to the First Team.

Golf: Rochester was ranked in the nation's Top 25 for much of the fall and spring. The Yellowjackets finished second at the UAA championships in April. Scott Clyde '03 was named First Team All-UAA, and three others were named to the Second Team.

Men's Track & Field: The Yellowjackets finished second in the New York State championships, which Rochester hosted at Fauver Stadium. The 4-by-400 meter relay team (Justin Lamontagne '02, Brian Strandberg '03, Andy MacMillan '02, Damien Leonard '02) won its event, and J. C. Rondash '03 won the pole vault. Jacob Budny '04 won the decathlon at the New York State meet, and a week later he won again at the ECAC championships. Budny earned a trip to the NCAA national championships in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he finished 14th of 16.

Women's Track & Field: Rochester took third at the New York State championships. The 4-by-400 meter relay team (Liz Conway '03, Michelle Gabriele '04, Angela Burgess '03, Kate O'Brien '05) finished second. Erika Wasserstein '04 competed in the NCAA Division III national championships at Macalester College in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (a new event for women this year) and finished 12th.

Baseball: Despite a mid-season run capped with eight wins in 11 games and a 6-4 triumph over eventual Division III World Series team RPI, the baseball team finished head coach Joe Reina's first year 15-18-1 (4-6 UCAA). Mike Lesczinski '04 was named First Team All-UAA and Honorable Mention All-UCAA. He hit .354 and was nearly perfect with the glove at first base, handling 244 of 245 chances cleanly.
