1963

Vincent Frohne (PhD) has released a CD, Music for Brass, which includes his Sonata for Trumpet and Piano—featuring Eastman alumni James Searl ’60 (Mas) (trumpet) and John Landis ’62 (piano). Altogether, six Eastman School graduates perform on the recording. Vincent has been organist at St. Paul Church in Macomb, Ill., since 1984. He notes that he also is writing a philosophic treatise entitled, Aesthetics and Creativity in the 20th Century.

1968

Bill Cahn and Bob Becker ’69, ’71 (MM), along with other members of their internationally percussion quintet Nexus, were featured in three performances with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in November 2007. . . . Mary Ann Lackovich ’72 (MM) writes that she was invited in 2007 to 27th World Congress of Poets in Chennai, India, sponsored by the World Academy of Arts and Culture. While there, she was awarded the Corea Literature Prize for her most recent book of poetry, Heart Concerns. The book is dedicated in memory to, and contains a poem about, Walter Hendl, who was director of the Eastman School of Music from 1964 to 1972.

1969

Bob Becker (MM) ’71 (see ’68). . . . Max Stern writes that his Nebhel & Kinnor: Ancient Sounds of Music (Ariel University Center of Samaria) was commissioned by the Bible Lands Museum in Jerusalem. The recording features compositions written for reconstructions of biblical harps (3–10 strings), based on relics of Ancient music, along with his original works on biblical themes.

1970

Geary Larrick (MM) writes that he is recognizing 40 years of scholarly publication. A retired professor in the music department at the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point, he has six titles listed in Books in Print 2006–07, 22 citations in Music Article Guide 1968–1995, 52 items in 26 volumes of The Music Index 1968–2006, 36 citations in RILM Abstracts of Music Literature 1987–2007, and 92 items in WorldCat, an online network of library collections and materials. Geary’s first article, written for the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors Journal, appeared in 1968; he has a music review appearing in the fall 2007 issue of the same publication.

1977

Steven Ostrow writes that he was featured on the PBS Emmy Award–winning documentary Shortcuts to Happiness on the life of a musician. His arrangements have been performed with the Akron Symphony (where he has performed as guitar soloist but is a contract violinist) and the Cleveland Pops (as a trombone soloist). On trumpet, he records and has performed internationally with the klezmer band Yiddishe Cup. He is director of string studies at Old Trail School near Akron, Ohio.

1979

Michael Isaacson (PhD) announces the publication of Jewish Music as Midrash: What Makes Music Jewish? The book includes two companion CDs featuring Michael’s Jewish music compositions.

1981

Dan Locklair (DMA) had his choral music performed at an interfaith concert in Washington, D.C., and at Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh in November 2007, and at a Christmas concert in Boulder, Colo., in December 2007. Dan’s “Phoenix for Orchestra” had its world premiere in Winston-Salem, N.C., last fall.

1990

Bruce Diehl and his wife, Diane, send a photo to announce the birth of their second son, Paul Matthew, on May 16, 2007, in Springfield, Mass. Their son Jeremy is 3½. Diane works as a director in chemistry and applied technology at Waters Corp. in Milford, Mass. Bruce is director of the jazz program at Amherst College in Amherst. He writes, “Along with the typical teaching and rehearsals, we have begun a Jazz Composition Commission Series and have had works composed by Eastman alumni Nathan Childers ’00 (MM) (in 2005) and David Springfield ’92, ’94 (MM) (in 2006) and look forward to a new commission by David Rivello ’89 in 2008.”

1991

A tour last fall of Gateway Mastering in Portland, Maine, was the occasion for an alumni meeting between Robert Moody (MM), the music director of the Portland Symphony Orchestra, and Bob Ludwig ’66, founder of the award-winning studio. Moody was named music director of the symphony last May.

1992

Ingrid Gordon writes that contemporary chamber music ensemble Percussia premiered a new work and performed three additional pieces in a concert at the Queens Library’s Langston Hughes branch in November 2007. Ingrid is the ensemble’s artistic director.

1996

Mia Kim Hynes (DMA) and her husband, Jon Hynes ’98 (DMA) send a photo to announce the birth of their son, Liam Minsuh, on May 15, 2007. The couple presented lectures at the 2007 European Piano Teachers Association Convention in Novi Sad, Serbia, then traveled to Paris to present a recital at the Emmanuel International Church in Rueil-Malmaison. Mia is an associate professor of piano at the University of Central Missouri. Jon is director of the piano class program with the Arkansas Baptist school system. They divide their time between Warrensburg, Mo., and Little Rock, Ark.
