Eastman School of Music

1969 Max Stern writes: “My new symphony, Beyond the Sambatyon, which was commissioned, premiered, and recorded by the Israel Sinfonietta Beersheba earlier this year, has been released on CD along with other compositions [including] Bedouin Impressions, Laudations, and “Shepherd Song.” All these works draw inspiration from the Bible, desert, ethnic-liturgical sources, and Jewish history.”

1970 Geary Larrick (MM) published a book review in the spring 2017 issue of the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors Journal, marking his 50th year of writing articles for the journal. . . . Art Michaels writes that his brass quintets “Brassy Capriccio” and “Two Trillion Triplets” were published by Lassus Publications on Musicforbrass.com, and that three of his concert band pieces—“Mockingbirds,” “Horseshoe Curve,” and “Quintapade”—were published by Aamano Music.

1997 Ann Marie Willer (MA) has been named director of preservation services at the Northeast Document Conservation Center in Andover, Massachusetts. The center offers conservation treatment, digital imaging, and audio preservation services, as well as preservation training, consultations, and disaster advice to clients. She writes, “I am thankful for the student job I had in the conservation lab of the Sibley Music Library; the skills I learned there formed the foundation for my career in library preservation.”

2000 Ken Meyer (DMA) has published a book, Diatonic Arpeggios for Classical Guitar (Mel Bey Publications). Ken has performed around the world and teaches at Syracuse University and Onondaga Community College.

2013 Dave Chisholm, a cartoonist as well as a musician and composer, is the subject of the profile “Blending Skill Sets” in the September issue of Downbeat magazine. The article comes following the June release of Instrumental (Outside-In Music), a multimedia work written, drawn, and composed by Dave, consisting of a 200-plus-page graphic novel and an accompanying jazz soundtrack. Performing on the soundtrack are Dave on trumpet, synthesizer, and voice, Noah Berman ’12 on guitar, Michael Conrad (MM) on piano, Aaron Staebell ’05, ’10 (MM) on drums, and Benjamin Thomas ’10, ’12 (MM) on bass. Dave also writes that in April he unveiled the self-released Talking Under Water—“an album about heartbreak and coming to terms with loss”—with cellist Elise Hughey ’09, ’11 (MM).
