Statement on Today’s Active Shooter Situation

Today, at 1 p.m., local police and emergency personnel responded to River Campus for reports of an armed individual and possible shots fired. Our Department of Public Safety immediately issued AlertUR messages to the University community warning individuals to stay clear of the Hoyt Hall area of campus, and River Campus access was restricted.

At this point we know that 9 people were shot and killed by the gunman today on campus, and the gunman is also deceased. The identifications of those lost in this tragedy will be forthcoming by the Rochester Police Department as their response to the situation continues.

An AlertUR indicated that the situation ended at 1:37 pm today.

Many of the academic buildings on Eastman Quad have been closed, including Hoyt Hall which will remain closed for many days. Signs will be posted on buildings that have been closed.

Classes have been cancelled for today, but other University operations will continue as normal, including residential and dining services.

Our hearts go out to those involved in this terrible and tragic situation today, and especially to the families who have lost loved ones. Counseling services are readily available and that information is posted on the University’s Emergency page.

I will continue to update the University community as more information becomes available.
