We are one University, bound by a culture of mutual respect and mutual support. In recent weeks, anonymous email attacks and other personal derogation have increased. Throughout the country and on our campus, individuals have attacked others under the cover of anonymity.
Let me reassert our belief in civility and our respect for each other. I deplore hateful epithets whether shouted in the dark of night, written on walls, or posted to social media sites like Yik Yak. Racist, sexist and abusive speech weakens all of us.
It is on us, not only to help stop sexual assault but also to speak up for each other, to defend your roommates, friends and classmates against abusive language, to take the lead in valuing each member of our community.
