The Crisis in Haiti

The loss of thousands of lives and the physical devastation on the island of Haiti have been calamitous. The images and early news reports from Tuesday’s earthquake leave us deeply saddened.

The extent of this humanitarian crisis is unknown now, but our hearts go out to those who are touched directly by this tragedy.

For a small nation, the Republic of Haiti has ties to Rochester. We have a few students and alumni who reside there. And just this week, Catholic Chaplain Fr. Brian Cool and a group of undergraduates returned after helping to build a community center in the Dominican Republic, which shares a border with Haiti.

It is my understanding that students, faculty, and staff have started identifying ways for the University community to help the people of Haiti. As you are moved to raise funds or take other actions, please advise University Communications of your plans so that they can be shared with all of us.

At times like this, we draw strength from expressing our concern for others and assisting them.

Sincerely,
President Joel Seligman
