Remembering Nelson Mandela

To:        The University Community
From:   Joel Seligman

A few persons in each generation fundamentally improve their societies. Nelson Mandela was such an individual.

His example of courage, devotion to human dignity, and peace inspired the world. He showed that success in a political struggle could be crowned by a determination to reach out to an entire nation—not revenge. He showed that principle could prevail over power. He showed that human decency, integrity, and fairness can prevail if one perseveres.

He was a great leader whose example will inspire generations to come. All of us at the University of Rochester mourn his death.

Our flags will be at half staff in his honor today and will remain lowered through sundown Monday, Dec. 9. On Saturday, Dec. 7, our flags will also be lowered as previously planned in recognition of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
