Fall 2022 Message from President Mangelsdorf

Dear students, faculty, and staff,

Campus life has certainly evolved over the years. Quiet summers, when much of the residential campus seemed almost deserted, are a relic of the past. Today, the University of Rochester summer campus hums with activity from classes, sports camps, academic programs, and much more. The work of our campus, from the academic quads and playing fields to the operating theaters and consult rooms, continues unabated.

In the past, I might have written a “Welcome back!” message to send out in late summer. Today, it seems strange to welcome students, faculty, and staff back since many of you never left!

Nevertheless, the rhythm of the “old” academic year continues. Each new fall brings new students and faculty, enriching our community with new life, new hopes and dreams, new expertise, and new points of view. And each fall can be a new beginning for everyone – not just for the “new” people.

Fall 2022 is an opportunity to look ahead, and to savor the prospect of a new academic year and the experiences and discoveries the year will bring. As we meet new colleagues and renew old acquaintances, we both begin and continue the never-ending pursuit of making the world ever better through our scholarship, research, creation, and healing.

This pursuit, enshrined in our motto, “Meliora,” is a challenge. But accepting that challenge is, in many ways, its own reward. And I hope all of you discover great rewards in the coming year.

Meliora!

Sarah C. Mangelsdorf
President and G. Robert Witmer, Jr. University Professor
