Early this morning at about 12:30 a.m., a University undergraduate student was the victim of an attempted sexual assault. The incident occurred in the Genesee Valley Park path area south of the Staybridge hotel. A passing witness alerted a Department of Public Safety (DPS) officer of someone screaming in the area, DPS located the student, who reported that an unknown male came up from behind and attempted to sexually assault them, but after a struggle, the suspect fled the area. DPS began a search of the area and located a person who matched a description given by the student and witness. The suspect who has no University affiliation was positively identified by the student, arrested, and remains in custody.

The Department of Public Safety and the Rochester Police Department is continuing to investigate this incident. Anyone who may be a witness to this crime or has additional information is encouraged to contact Public Safety at 5852753333
