Increase in car thefts

Over the past several days, the Department of Public Safety has seen an increase in instances of vandalism and thefts of items from vehicles, as well as actual thefts of Kia and Hyundai vehicles. DPS is providing extra attention to the University’s indoor and outdoor parking areas on all campuses to help prevent these incidents from becoming a larger concern.

DPS Interim Chief Gerald Pickering reminds University community members that the following actions can help reduce the likelihood of being victimized:

  • Remove from vehicles valuable items or anything that may appear appealing to thieves. Anything left in plain view in the vehicle motivates criminals to quickly break a window and grab the items. Always take your valuables with you. When possible, keep the inside of your car empty.
  • Always lock your vehicle, set the alarm, and when possible, park in well-lighted areas.
  • If you see any suspicious vehicles loitering around campus parking lots or garages, call or text DPS at (585) 275-3333.
  • If your vehicle is vandalized or stolen, please report it to DPS so that DPS leaders can fully understand the scope of the activity and help to recover lost possessions.
  • Use a theft prevention tool, such as a steering wheel lock. DPS is able to provide a free wheel lock to anyone in the University community who owns or drives a Hyundai or Kia. While supplies last, individuals can pick up a steering wheel lock at DPS headquarters, 612 Wilson Blvd., River Campus, by showing a University ID and proof of owning or driving a Hyundai or Kia vehicle, such as a vehicle registration card.

DPS appreciates the University community’s help with these prevention efforts and continues to work with area law enforcement agencies in an attempt to identify suspects who are committing these crimes.
