Patenting an invention requires several years and thousands of dollars; in the US, it costs approximately $17,000 – $20,000 to issuance and $25,000 – $30,000 in lifetime costs. Because of this, URVentures cannot patent all technologies disclosed to our office.
Annually, patent budgets are established for the River Campus and the Medical Center. IP costs that are covered by the patent budget include new patent filings, prosecution costs, outside counsel fees, and maintenance fees. As a rule of thumb, approximately ⅓ of each budget goes towards new patent filings, ⅓ goes towards ongoing patent prosecution of pending applications, and ⅓ goes toward maintenance fees of issued patents.
