Elementary Mathematics Content Institutes

Overview:

Having a rich understanding of mathematics influences instructional decisions such as selecting tasks, posing purposeful questions, and devising ways to support and challenge students’ thinking. These institutes will engage participants in experiences designed to uncover the underlying mathematical ideas and algebraic reasoning associated with:

  • numbers and operations
  • geometric and measurement concepts
  • rational numbers and proportional reasoning

as they develop across the elementary grades while being reflective about how people learn mathematics, what contributes to their mathematical identities, and creates optimal learning environments for learning and growing.

Virtual Elementary Mathematics Institutes

Numbers, Operations, and Algebraic Thinking

This institute will examine number and numeration, the structure of the base ten system, and operation sense for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Eligibility:

K-12 STEM Educators and/or Members of the Northeast Professional Learning Network including current Noyce Scholars, current Noyce MTF Fellows, and graduate Noyce Scholar or MTF Programs.

Format: Zoom

Dates and Times:

  • Monday, July 15th 8:30 – 11:00am; 1 – 3:30pm
  • Wednesday, July 17th 8:30 – 11:00am

Stipend:

Members of the Northeast Noyce Professional Learning Network are eligible for a $215 stipend for participating in all three Zoom sessions.

Rationale:

The journey through elementary math requires students to develop a strong foundation of number, operation, algebraic thinking that are continuously constructed and extended over time. This requires teachers of elementary mathematics to understand how mathematical ideas develop, connect, and can be made visible to students.  Elementary math specialists, supporting teachers and students, are required to have a deep understanding of how mathematical ideas develop within and across grade levels, and understand how to translate this content knowledge into pedagogical practices that lead to meaningful mathematics learning.

Participants will develop knowledge of mathematical ideas developed in the elementary grades. These include:

  • Early number concepts and number sense
  • Meanings for the foundational operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
  • Place-value concepts
  • Connecting number and algebraic thinking

Geometry and Measurement

This institute will examine spatial sense, geometric properties, transformation, meaning of measurement, and the measurement process.

K-12 STEM Educators and/or Members of the Northeast Noyce Professional Learning Network including current Noyce Scholars, current Noyce MTFs, and graduates of Noyce Scholar and MTF Programs.

Friday, July 19th 8:30 – 11:00am; 1 – 3:30pm

  • Describing the major geometry goals for students
  • Analyzing pathways for learning about shapes, properties, and measurement
  • Describing the meaning and process of measuring
  • Connecting number, geometric, and measurement concepts

Rational Numbers and Proportional Reasoning

This institute will examine fraction, decimal, and percent concepts, fraction operations, and their connections to proportional reasoning.

Candidates demonstrate knowledge of mathematical ideas developed in the elementary grades. These include:

  • Describing the meaning of fraction concepts
  • Demonstrate an understanding of fraction operations
  • Demonstrate an understanding of proportional and non-proportional situations with additive and multiplicative examples
