Student Honors
Robert Penna '07 and doctoral students Brooke Chuzles and Ryan Cowley were all awarded graduate research fellowships from the National Science Foundation. The fellowship is a national
award given to outstanding students in natural sciences, selected social sciences, mathematics,
and engineering that provides support for three years of research-based graduate study.
Kristin Beck '09, Kathryn Knowles '08, and Andrew Niles '08 were named Goldwater Scholars,
a national award given to outstanding undergraduate students planning to pursue careers in
mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering. Beck is working toward a bachelor of science
degree in physics and a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics. Knowles is pursuing a bachelor of
science in chemistry and a bachelor of arts with honors in mathematics. Niles is working toward a
bachelor of arts with honors in mathematics.
Three students, Anat Kardontchik '07 and graduate students Doug O'Connor and Alexander
Timofeev, placed in the Music Teachers National Association 2007 National Competition. Violinist
Kardontchik took first prize in the string division; O'Connor also took first in the woodwind division
for a saxophone performance, and Timofeev placed third in the piano division.
The U.S. Department of Energy awarded two fellowships to University of Rochester students in
the plasma physics and fusion energy sciences program. Samuel Harrold '09, a Tallahassee, Fla.,
native who majors in physics, astronomy, and applied mathematics, received a fellowship along
with physics, mathematics, and music major Daniel Richman '08 from Wyckoff, N.J.
