Poetic Traditions
Works from three poet-professors spanning
more than 60 years were on display
at Rush Rhees Library this year in an
exhibit titled "Poets at the University:
Three Generations."
The University has a tradition of
keeping poets on the faculty and offering
poetry readings in the classroom and in
the larger community. "Three Generations"
highlighted faculty poets from
1945 to today—Hyam Plutzik, Jarold
Ramsey, and James Longenbach.
The works were featured in the
Hilfiker Gallery of the Rare Books and
Special Collections Department on the
second floor of the library.
Longenbach, the H. Gilmore Professor
of English, is still on the faculty and
was also featured in the Hyam Plutzik
Memorial Reading Series this spring.
Plutzik was a distinguished poet and
Deane Professor of Poetry and Rhetoric
at the University until his death in 1962.
The series is primarily funded by
Plutzik's family through the Hyam
Plutzik Poetry Series Endowment.
