Acting Globally
Acting Globally
Description
Acting Globally is a UR-alum-led nonprofit that connects college student volunteers with NGO's across the world that need their help. We are currently looking for volunteers to work with the Congo Peace Academy. We are finding new organizations and volunteering opportunities every day, so please check in with us and our website to stay updated!
The ongoing war and displacement in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have severely disrupted educational opportunities for the children that have arrived in migrant camps, like the Rusayo camp. Many children, particularly those aged 12 to 17, do not have access to formal schooling due to the lack of resources and infrastructure within the camp.
The prolonged displacement and exposure to violence have taken a toll on the mental well-being of children in the camp. There is a notable absence of psychosocial support mechanisms to address trauma and emotional distress among the youth population.
Despite the challenging circumstances, there is a remarkable display of artistic potential among the children in Rusayo camp, particularly in the areas of poetry, painting, and music. Many children exhibit a keen interest in creative expression as a means of coping with adversity, expressing their emotions, and telling their stories.
Local authorities, camp managers, parents, and children expressed unanimous support for initiatives aimed at promoting the holistic development of displaced youth. There is a strong sense of community solidarity and a willingness to collaborate with external partners to improve the well-being of children in the camp.
Acting Globally volunteers will work digitally alongside CPA volunteers on the ground in Rusayo camp in the "Art for Change" program. Student volunteers will use a curriculum approved by child psychologists and art therapists to lead groups of 1-3 children through art sessions, including painting, music, poetry, and other that the children are most interested in. (No prior artistic skills needed beyond interest!)(Children and volunteers will be screened for interest ahead of time - musicians may be paired with kids who want to make music, etc.)
The "Art for Change" program is working to give children hope, and allow them to channel their energy and time into positive activities, rather than dwell on the negativity of the national conflict and the things they have resultantly lost.
Volunteers will work with Acting Globally staff and CPA volunteers to learn about the conflict in the DRC, and will be provided with guidance and support throughout the whole process. Together, we can work to end the cycle of violence by supporting children, and helping them to work towards the path of peace.

Empowering People's Independence
Empowering People's Independence
Description
Our Camp Counselors assist young adult campers with epilepsy and intellectual disabilities to develop confidence, try new things, and create lasting friendships in a fast-paced, fun camp setting. Camp COAST allows campers to experience typical sleepaway camp activities such as swimming, rock wall climbing and water sports in ways that they might be discouraged from trying due to their epilepsy. In addition, there is a vocational component that allows these emerging adults the opportunity to explore job skills in preparation for work experiences. Our higher staffing levels and access to medical professionals give families and caregivers confidence that their adult campers, some with special needs, will be safe while developing social-emotional skills as well as outdoor skills and new experiences. Camp COAST allows our campers to recognize that epilepsy does not define them or stop them from having fun or reaching their goals. Our camp counselors are a vital part of this process. If you are looking for a rewarding volunteer experience like no other, we welcome the opportunity to discuss details and success stories with you!

Rochester Hope
Rochester Hope
Description
Rochester Hope is a grassroots organization striving to bring services and caring hands to the heart of the city of Rochester by connecting people in need with existing services, and working to create opportunities to help meet unmet needs.
We are located on the campus of Saint Michael's Church, at 869 N Clinton Ave, in the northeast area of the city of Rochester. Among other efforts, we operate a food pantry on Saturdays, serving 250-300 households each week. While providing food, our main goal is to build the dignity and worth of everyone who walks through our door. In conjunction with the pantry we also provide meals and wrap-around services for those both shopping at the pantry and those unhoused in our neighborhood.
We are looking for volunteers of all faiths and walks of life, and in this way, foster a culture of encounter. Assistance is needed in helping individuals shop, stocking shelves, helping people to check in, assist with hospitality, and helping individuals connect with the service agencies present. Especially helpful, but not required, is the ability to speak Spanish.
