The master’s essay is a capstone project that enables students to synthesize the work they have done throughout the PPCM program. The master’s essay addresses the fundamental issues at the core of the program: Photographs are both objects and images, and in both instances they have particular theoretical, historical, and physical dimensions peculiar to their specific form.
Master’s essays can be practical projects accompanied by written documentation explaining the problems the student addressed and the methods employed for solving them. They can also be analytic works treating a given object or collection of objects. Or they can be hybrid works, part practical and part analytic.
