                                                                    A Message from the Director of Athletics—
                                                                    George VanderZwaag



                                                                                        I’m enormously proud of what
                                                                                        our students accomplished this
                                                                                        fall. For instance, our fi eld hockey
                                                                                        and men’s soccer teams reached
                                                                                        the national quarterfi nals and
                                                                                        women’s cross country team had
                                                                                        a national qualifi er. Our squash
                                                                                        and men’s and women’s basketball
                                                                                        teams also continue to excel and
                                                                                        started the year ranked in the top
                                                                                        25 nationally.

                                                                    Personal highlights from this season include attending
                                                                    NCAA Championships with our fi eld hockey and men’s
                                                                    soccer teams—it was a thrill to celebrate their successes
                                                                    with them. Looking ahead, the stage is set for a great season
                                                                    for our winter and spring teams, too.

                                                                    Year after year, our students seem to raise the bar in
                                                                    terms of their accomplishments on and off  the fi eld. This
                                                                    includes students like Geoff rey Rouin ’18 (soccer) and
                                                                    Courtney Dunham ’19 (fi eld hockey) who recently earned
                                                                    All-American status, and Nik Angyal ’19 and Bryce Ikeda ’19
                                                                    (soccer) who were named Academic All-Americans.

                                                                    This fall, we also marked a signifi cant milestone: the
                                                                    opening of Genesee Hall, the University’s newest residential
                                                                    hall that features the Boehning Varsity House as part of the
                                                                    Prince Athletic Complex—two fl oors of dedicated locker
                                                                    rooms—and the Big R atrium—a large open space that
                                                                    welcomes our students and athletes. We are grateful to
                                                                    our University Trustees, Brian Prince ’86, ’89S (MBA); Chris
                                                                    Boehning ’87, ’88 (MS) and his wife, Julie; and Stephen
                                                                    Biggar ’92 and his wife, Elisabeth Asaro-Biggar ’92 for their
                                                                    vision and leadership, and we are thankful to many others
                                                                    who have supported Athletics in other ways, from naming a
                                                                    locker to contributing to our annual fund.

                                                                    We have also completed a search for a head football coach.
                                                                    We are welcoming Chad Martinovich to the University.
                                                                    Chad has successfully led the football program at MIT over
                                                                    the past nine seasons and will offi  cially begin his duties on
                                                                    February 12.
                                                                    Most importantly, thank you for your generosity—it helps
                                                                    us advance the University of Rochester’s mission and attract
                                                                    students who surpass our expectations in everything they
                                                                    do. We are grateful for your support.
