ROCHESTER ATHLETICS
A Message from the Director of Athletics—
George VanderZwaag
I’m enormously proud of what
our students accomplished this
fall. For instance, our fi eld hockey
and men’s soccer teams reached
the national quarterfi nals and
women’s cross country team had
a national qualifi er. Our squash
and men’s and women’s basketball
teams also continue to excel and
started the year ranked in the top
25 nationally.
Personal highlights from this season include attending
NCAA Championships with our fi eld hockey and men’s
soccer teams—it was a thrill to celebrate their successes
with them. Looking ahead, the stage is set for a great season
for our winter and spring teams, too.
Year after year, our students seem to raise the bar in
terms of their accomplishments on and off the fi eld. This
includes students like Geoff rey Rouin ’18 (soccer) and
Courtney Dunham ’19 (fi eld hockey) who recently earned
All-American status, and Nik Angyal ’19 and Bryce Ikeda ’19
(soccer) who were named Academic All-Americans.
This fall, we also marked a signifi cant milestone: the
opening of Genesee Hall, the University’s newest residential
hall that features the Boehning Varsity House as part of the
Prince Athletic Complex—two fl oors of dedicated locker
rooms—and the Big R atrium—a large open space that
welcomes our students and athletes. We are grateful to
our University Trustees, Brian Prince ’86, ’89S (MBA); Chris
Boehning ’87, ’88 (MS) and his wife, Julie; and Stephen
Biggar ’92 and his wife, Elisabeth Asaro-Biggar ’92 for their
vision and leadership, and we are thankful to many others
who have supported Athletics in other ways, from naming a
locker to contributing to our annual fund.
We have also completed a search for a head football coach.
We are welcoming Chad Martinovich to the University.
Chad has successfully led the football program at MIT over
the past nine seasons and will offi cially begin his duties on
February 12.
Most importantly, thank you for your generosity—it helps
us advance the University of Rochester’s mission and attract
students who surpass our expectations in everything they
do. We are grateful for your support.
Meliora!
