The International Flavor of UR Squash

Overall, the University of Rochester squash team boasts 11 players on its roster from seven different countries around the world.  Here, we profile the Yellowjackets three reigning All-American selections, Neil Cordell, Mario Yanez-Tapia and Ryosei Kobayashi, talking about how they got started in squash, why they chose Rochester and more!

Junior Neil Cordell, York, England
Upstate New York may not seem like the most logical place for a student from England to attend college.  Travelling such a long distance is no small task, but the change of scenery is nothing new to UR junior Neil Cordell, who, prior to coming to Rochester, often travelled around the world for squash competitions.

Sophomore Mario Yanez-Tapia, Aguascalientes, Mexico
Sophomore Mario Yanez-Tapia, an All-American and Rochester's current top player, has enjoyed remarkable success in his first year and a half as a Yellowjacket, amassing a career record of 28-4 and earning a top-ten national ranking.  Success, however, is nothing new for the former top ranked junior player in his native Mexico, whose journey to Rochester would likely never have happened were it not for squash and the doors it has opened for him.

Sophomore Ryosei Kobayashi, Yokohama, Japan
More than a decade ago in Japan, an avid racquetball player decided to introduce his seven year old son to the world of racquet sports.  But instead of racquetball, the two began to play squash.  While the decision may not have seemed important at the time, it turned out to be the first step in what has become a remarkably successful athletic career for UR sophomore and All-American Ryosei Kobayashi, currently ranked eleventh in the country by the College Squash Association.
