A LARGE ACHILLES TRIBE TAKES UP THE EXTENDED ALUMNI FAMILY CHALLENGE

Writes C. M. Achilles '59, '62W (Mas),'65W(S),'67W (PhD):

The challenge on page 55 of the fall 1997 Rochester Review sent me to family records; then your winter 199798 issue with records of other families re-energized me. You asked to hear from any alumni with an extended Rochester family; I presume this includes marriage.

The following is a list of the members of the Achilles family who attended and/or graduated from the University of Rochester, including the Eastman School and the School of Medicine and Dentistry. I have listed the direct Achilles line first, followed by marriage associations. Finally, I have included some speculations on the Achilles genealogy, which I can't confirm.

Family members: Henry Ludwig Achilles 1857; Charles Phipps Achilles 1858; Henry Louis Achilles 1885 (Henry did not graduate. Henry's first wife was Gertrude Strong, who with her sister, Helen, provided the University with several gifts. Their close ties suggest a University connection.); Charles Bowen Achilles; Carolyn Elizabeth Achilles Connor; Barbara Helen Achilles '53; Charles M. Achilles '59, '62W (Mas), '65W (S), '67W (PhD); and Stephen F. Achilles '92M (Res).

By marriage: William Frederick Taylor, husband of Caroline M. Achilles; Robert Connor, husband of Caroline E. Achilles; Carol Gingery Achilles '74W (Mas); and Tena Ann Achilles, attended Warner School, mother of Charles M. Achilles.

I hope that I have not missed any of the direct Achilles line. Since there are Achilles graduates from 1857 through 1992, this may be the longest span of time (135 years) if not the largest group of alumni. The entire area of speculations offers a major challenge for expanding this extended family. Without further work, this known list of 12 falls short of the admirable record of 13 reported by Kristen Van Ostrand. Is there a tuition waiver for every 12th person?

Editor's note: There was indeed a close connection between Gertrude Strong Achilles and her sister, Helen Strong Carter, and the University. Among their gifts was Strong Memorial Hospital, given in memory of their parents.
