First Riker Prize for Political Science Awarded

The first William H. Riker Prize, named for Rochester's renowned political science professor, was awarded last spring to Robert H. Bates, Eaton Professor of the Science of Government at Harvard University.

The Riker prize is intended to promote the scientific study of politics, a specialty of the Department of Political Science and one of Riker's most cherished projects.

Riker, who joined the faculty in 1962, and his colleagues established Rochester as one of the leading centers of political science in the nation. Riker died in 1993.
