NAMED CHAIRS

Several faculty assumed named professorships during 1999-2000:

Bradford Berk, chair of the University Medical Center's Department of Medicine, was named the Charles A. Dewey Professor of Medicine. The Dewey Professorship was established by the bequest of Charles Dewey, Class of 1861. He was the son of Chester Dewey, one of the University's founding faculty members.

Hartmut Land, professor of biochemistry and director of the Center for Cancer Biology, became the first Robert and Dorothy Markin Professor. The new chair honors Robert and Dorothy Markin, a Rochester couple. Robert Markin founded the Markin Insurance Agency, which later became part of Hatch-Leonard/ Markin-Shaw.

Richard Niemi, professor of political science, was appointed the Don Alonzo Watson Professor of Political Science. Watson, co-founder of Western Union, endowed the professorship to acknowledge achievements in the study of political science and history.

G. Bingham Powell, Jr., professor of political science, was named the Marie Curran Wilson and Joseph Chamberlain Wilson Professor of Political Science. The chair is one of a number established by Joseph '31 and Marie Wilson, who were major University benefactors.

Randy N. Rosier, professor and chair of orthopaedics, was named the Marjorie Strong Wehle Professor of Orthopaedics. Established in 1995, the professorship was funded through gifts of Marjorie Strong Wehle.

Douglas Ravenel, professor of mathematics, was appointed the Daniel Burton Fayerweather Professor of Mathematics. The professorship is named for a New York City leather merchant who left a bequest to the University in 1890.

Joanna Scott, professor of English, became the Roswell Smith Burrows Professor of English. The professorship, established in 1901, honors the father of the donor, Mary E. Stewart.
