New Library for Contemporary Writing Opens

Students and scholars at the University have a new center for the teaching of creative writing and for research related to modern American literature.

The Hyam Plutzik Library for Contemporary Writing, located in Rush Rhees Library, was formally dedicated in April.

Named in honor of the late poet and University Professor of English Hyam Plutzik, the new library complements many of the writing programs offered by the College and its Department of English.

The interior of the new facility is named for Jarold Ramsey, noted poet and professor emeritus of English, who was a longtime director of the Plutzik poetry series.

Lined with bookcases, the new library also is home to the 10,000 items in the William and Hannelore Heyen Collection, which is considered among the finest assemblages of inscribed first editions, manuscripts, and correspondence from major American writers in the past 30 years.
