SPRING WRAP-UP

Rochester teams bloomed last spring, with four teams advancing to postseason play and two others winning conference championships.

Joanna Toke '03 finished as the NCAA Division III national singles runner-up in women's tennis. On her way through the 32-player tournament field, Toke defeated the defending national champion in a three-set semifinal match.

She finished her season at 22-4 in singles play. The championship match loss snapped a 13-match winning streak in the spring.

Toke is the second Rochester woman to finish as national runner-up in the last three years.

As a team, the Yellowjackets finished second in the New York State championships, third in the UCAA championships, and third in the UAA championships.

Men's Tennis: Rochester returned to the national championships for the first time since 1997. The Yellowjackets lost to MIT in the first round but finished 12-9. The 12 wins included a victory over 23rd-ranked Kenyon College, a runner-up finish in the UCAA championships, and a third-place finish in the UAA championships.

Baseball: The Yellowjackets reached the ECAC Upstate New York championship game before losing to Clarkson. Rochester was 19-15 overall and finished second in the UCAA.

Women's Lacrosse: Rochester finished 8-6 overall after a quarterfinal round loss to Nazareth College in the New York State championships. It was Rochester's third New York State playoff appearance in the last four years.

Softball: Rochester won the UCAA championship by sweeping doubleheaders from RPI and Skidmore on consecutive days. The Yellowjackets finished 6-2 in the UCAA and won 7 of 10 down the stretch. The team's overall record was 12-23.

Golf: A strong second- day performance by all five players helped the Yellowjackets win the UAA championship at The Country Club of Rochester. Tournament medalist Mike Quijano '03 was also named UAA Golfer of the Year. Jason Bronstein '04 was UAA Rookie of the Year.

Men's Outdoor Track & Field: The Yellowjackets punctuated their season by finishing third out of 64 teams at the ECAC championships. Rochester was unbeaten in dual meets in the regular season and finished third at the New York State championships. Darren Gaul '01 was the state javelin champion.

Women's Outdoor Track & Field: Rochester finished second at its nine-team invitational (the largest dual meet of the season), 10th at the New York State championships, and 36th of 64 at the ECAC championships.
