Students Raise $30,000 To Aid Victims Of September's Attacks
As events of last fall unfolded, Rochester students banded together to raise nearly $30,000 in a series of fund-raisers. On the River Campus, a weeklong drive led by students in the College raised $20,000. At the Eastman School, a special benefit concert-featuring a performance of Mozart's Requiem by a student and community chorus along with the Eastman Philharmonia-raised $9,000, and other concerts in the weeks after September 11 also gathered donations. At the Medical Center, students, faculty, and staff lined up for several blood drives. "We'd like to go to Manhattan and help shovel, but we know that that's not practical for most of us," said John LaBoda, president of the Students' Association of the College. "So we thought, 'Let's do what we can here.' We thought, 'Let's raise money. Everybody needs money in a time like this.'" Students in the College reacted to the news of disasters with the same shock felt throughout the country. Classes were canceled, and students gathered around campus televisions for news. "I live in the city and am used to seeing [the towers] every day. It's hard to believe they are gone," said Zakia Barnes '05. "It just makes me realize that life is valuable." Irene Lippa '04 expressed what many students felt: that life would never be the same. "We're all wondering what will happen next," she said. "A lot will change over the next few years."
