RX FOR NURSING SHORTAGE: NEW TRAINING PROGRAMS

Hoping to help avoid a predicted national shortage of nurses, the School of Nursing has created two new programs that allow college graduates to become nurses more quickly.

Rochester joins only three other schools in New York and only 25 in the country to offer the accelerated programs.

Open to people with a degree in any discipline, the initiative is designed to build on the education level of new students. A bachelor's program and a master's program are offered.

Students who have already completed such prerequisite courses as anatomy and physiology can earn a bachelor's degree in as little as one year of study.

The accelerated master's program includes an initial year to earn the bachelor's degree and two additional years of training that include an intensive classroom component.

In a related effort, the School of Nursing and Strong Memorial Hospital have received about $1.25 million in grants and scholarships to help students, employees, and low-income workers train for positions in health care.
