Alejandro Zaffaroni (PhD), '72 (HNR), founder and director emeritus of Alza Corp., received the University of California at San Francisco's UCSF Medal.

John Bickmore (PhD) received the Chester F. Carlson Award from the Society for Imaging Science and Technology. Bickmore, who retired from Xerox in 1998 after 43 years at the company, was recognized for his work on xerographic developers.

Joseph Andrews (MD) published the third edition of his book, Revolutionary Boston, Lexington, and Concord: The Shots Heard 'Round the World. He describes the book as a guided tour of the regions and anecdotes presented in a casual and informative style.

Robert Sutherland (PhD) was appointed to the board of directors for Xillix of Richmond, British Columbia. He is president of the biosynergy unit of Varian Medical Systems and has more than 35 years of experience in cancer research and biophysics.

Charles Rodning (MD) received the Howard L. Holley Award from the Medical Association of Alabama. He also received the Humanism in Medicine Award from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation and the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey. . . . John Rowe (MD), '02 (HNR), president and CEO of Aetna, gave the address at the University's Commencement for M.D. graduates in May and received an honorary doctor of science degree.

Joseph Martin (PhD), dean of the Harvard University Faculty of Medicine, was elected to the board of directors of Baxter International Inc. of Deerfield, Ill. . . . Robert Ozols (PhD) '74 (MD) (see '66 undergraduate).

David Satcher (Res), former Surgeon General of the United States, was elected to the board of directors of Johnson & Johnson and agreed to serve as voluntary advisor to Project Believe at the Medical Center.

Thomas Coughlin Jr. (MD) has been named CEO and director of Centrex of Tulsa, Okla. Prior to joining the company in 1999, he was a cardiovascular and transplant surgeon for more than 25 years.

Mark Perrone (PhD) joined Merrimack Pharmaceuticals of Cambridge, Mass., as vice president of research and development.

Martha Somerman (PhD) was named the dean of the University of Washington's school of dentistry. Previously associate dean for research at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, she is an expert in cell behavior and in molecular approaches to restoring tissue.

Pediatrician Steven Lana (MD), a private pediatrician at Delaware Pediatric Associates in Buffalo, N.Y., formed a group of doctors and supporters called Women and Children First to fight a proposed integration of Children's Hospital of Buffalo into Buffalo General Hospital.
