“My mom’s position was, ‘I don’t care if you go to a community college—I just want you to be able to get an education.’ I always had the grades—that wasn’t a problem. The motivation for me was that that everyone always thought that I could make it. So I thought, ‘If I make it through high school, that means I can make it through college. I don’t care where I go or what I do—I know I can make it academically.’”
