Winter Sports Wrap-Up

Women’s Basketball: The Yellowjackets advanced to the Sweet Sixteen round of the NCAA tournament before falling to top-ranked Bowdoin. The team finished the season at 22–6 and tied for third in the UAA with a 9–5 mark. Rochester was led by Danielle Muller ’07, who earned first-team All–UAA status for the third straight year and received first-team All-Region accolades as well. Point guard Emily Bango ’07 was selected for the second-team All–UAA for the second consecutive year. She was joined by post player Julie Marriott ’09 on the second team.

Men’s Basketball: After winning the JPMorgan Chase Scholarship Tournament for the eighth time, Rochester suffered one of the most crushing losses in the program’s history in the first round of the NCAA tournament, when SUNY Plattsburgh’s Anthony Williams sank a buzzer-beating, desperation three-pointer to beat the Yellowjackets 61–60. The Yellowjackets finished the season at 18–8. Jon Onyiriuka ’08 earned first-team All-UAA honors, while guard Tim Brackney ’07 was selected for the second team. Guards Jeff Juron ’08 and Mike Chmielowiec ’09 and forward Uche Ndubizu ’08 were honorable mentions.

Women’s Swimming and Diving: The Yellowjackets finished their dual-meet season with a 5–3 record, then placed fifth at the UAA championships. Kari Joyce ’07 represented Rochester at the NCAA championships, where she earned All-America honors in the 200-yard freestyle, placing 14th and breaking her own school record with a time of a 1:54.52. She also swam in the 100-yard freestyle at nationals.

Men’s Swimming and Diving: Rochester finished its dual-meet schedule with seven consecutive wins and entered the NCAA top 20 going into the UAA championships. The Yellowjackets placed seventh at the UAA meet.

Squash: Jim Bristow ’10 posted a 21–2 overall record—including 20 straight wins—on his way to finishing 11th in the final national rankings. As a team the Yellowjackets placed third at the Liberty League championships, then showed so much improvement over the season that they jumped two brackets at the Collegiate Squash Association’s national team championships and climbed as high as No. 16 in the national polls. The Yellowjackets earned the Barnaby Trophy as the most improved collegiate team.

Women’s Indoor Track: Rochester placed 9th out of 16 teams at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference championships and qualified nine athletes for the ECAC meet. At the ECAC championships, the 4-by-800 meter relay unit—Sarah Gollub ’10, Lisa Cole ’10, Suzanne Giunta ’10, and Kellie Hasselwander ’08—finished third and shattered the Rochester record with a time of 9:42.60.

Men’s Indoor Track: Mike Burgstrom ’08 won the weight throw title at the state Collegiate Track Conference championships and placed second at the ECAC championships. He earned All-America status in the weight throw by placing fifth at the NCAA championships. As a team, Rochester finished 5th out of 15 teams at the state championships, where Travis Buttaccio ’09 won the long jump.
