University Honors Alumni Leaders Two alumni who have been leaders in fighting for equal opportunities in education and in the workplace received the University’s Frederick Douglass Medal this fall.

Walter Cooper ’57 (PhD), a retired research scientist at Eastman Kodak Co., a founding member of the Rochester chapter of the National Urban League and Action for a Better Community, and a New York State regent emeritus; and David Kearns ’52, retired CEO of Xerox Corp., former deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Education under President George H. W. Bush, and University life trustee and past board chair, were recognized at a celebration of their achievements in September.

The University also honored Robert Goergen ’60, the chairman and CEO of Blyth Inc. of Greenwich, Conn., and one of the nation’s leading educational philanthropists. Goergen, a trustee since 1982 and board chair for 12 years, received the Charles Force Hutchison and Marjorie Smith Hutchison Medal, the University’s highest alumni honor. Goergen received the award during this fall’s College Convocation, a ceremony at which the College presents its annual teaching awards, named in recognition of the support of Goergen and his wife, Pamela.
