Highlights Softball Wins Third Liberty Title, NCAA Berth

The softball team set a record for wins this spring, finishing at 33–12, taking its third consecutive Liberty League title, and clinching its third straight berth in the NCAA championships.

Rochester was led by hurler Beth Ameno ’09, who earned third-team all-America honors, received first-team all–UAA honors, and picked up Liberty League Pitcher of the Year accolades. Shortstop Lindsay Macaluso ’11 was named Liberty League Player of the Year and the ECAC Upstate New York Player of the Year, while outfielder Kim Grimes ’12 was named the Rookie of the Year for both the Liberty League and ECAC. Macaluso and Grimes also received first-team all–UAA nods, and head coach Michelle Burrell and assistant Margaret Yeardon were jointly named the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year.

Baseball: The Yellowjackets won the team title at the UAA championships, with Jay Jay Vanderstyne ’09 receiving tournament MVP honors. Rochester posted an overall mark of 30–12, led by first baseman Dan Brien ’09 and pitcher Mike Park ’09, who each received first-team all–UAA and first-team all–Liberty League recognition. Outfielder Alex Caghan ’12 was named the UAA Rookie of the Year.

Golf: David Wien ’12 earned UAA Rookie of the Year honors after placing second overall at the association championships and leading Rochester to a third-place team finish. Michael Chudacoff ’12 came in fifth at UAAs to join Wien on the all–UAA first team. Chudacoff also won the individual title at the Fred B. Kravetz Invite.

Lacrosse: The Yellowjackets were led by midfielder Abby Woodward ’09, who received first-team all–Liberty League recognition for the second time in her career. Attacker Lindsay Dakin ’09 claimed second-team league honors. Rochester advanced to the Liberty League tournament for the first time and finished the season at 8–9.

Women’s Tennis: The team placed seventh at the UAA championships and completed the 2009 campaign with a dual-match mark of 13–8. Melinda Beckman ’09, Jillian Dann ’11, Diane Samuels ’11, and Lia Weiner ’11 received UAA all-Academic team accolades. Weiner also was named an honorable mention all-American by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Men’s Tennis: The Yellowjackets hosted the UAA championships, where they finished seventh overall. The team accumulated a 2009 dual-match mark of 11–1, while Daniel Barbash ’11, Brian Bowman ’10, Patrick Sheehan ’11, and Jeffrey Zink ’11 were named to the UAA all-Academic team.

Women’s Track & Field: Jacqueline Cinella ’11 won the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, Latoya Dunbar ’09 earned the title at 100 meters, and Melissa Skevington ’10 leaped to victory in the long jump to guide the women to a third-place team finish at the New York state championships. Cinella went on to place fifth in the 400-meter hurdles at the ECAC championships.

Men’s Track & Field: Three second-place individual finishers—Will McMunigal ’12 in the long jump, Eric Scheele ’08 in the discus, and Jake Gardner ’10 in the hammer—helped give the Yellowjackets a fifth-place team finish at the state championships. Brian Lang ’11 was fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and Dan Chebot ’09 was sixth in the 10,000 meters at the ECAC championships.
