Sports: Student Aces Exam and Golf Championship

golfer Stephen Goodridge

“It was a full day,” says Stephen Goodridge ’08 of his unusual schedule last May. While on the road in Lincoln, Nebraska, competing in the NCAA Division III golf championship, he took the first part of his Optics 261 final exam in the morning, won the final round of the national individual golf championship in the afternoon, then finished taking his exam that night. With the win, Goodridge became the University’s first national golf champion as well as the first to take an individual national title in any sport since 1988. And he passed his optics exam with flying colors.

Other notable achievements: Men’s squash took their second Conroy Cup at the Collegiate Squash Association championships. The men’s soccer team went 16–0–0 in the regular season—a school record for wins in a year—before losing in the second round of the NCAA playoffs. The women’s soccer team advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA playoffs after a 16–1–3 regular season.

Honors: Nate Micklos ’06 and Gary Stom ’06 were named All-Americans in soccer—Stom to the First Team, Micklos to the Third Team. Micklos also was named the ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-American of the Year, a First Team Academic All-American, and UAA Player of the Year. Jeremy Goico ’06 was named a Second Team All-American in soccer. In women’s soccer, Mary Walsh ’07 was named the UAA Player of the Year, and Ashley Van Vechten ’08 was named a First Team All-American. Nicholas Zappia ’07 was named a First Team Academic All-American in football, and Emily Bango ’07 received an All-American honorable mention in basketball.
