Chief Mark Fischer

Student Advocate of the Year

Mark Fischer

Presented by Jamal Holtz and Anne Marie Cortes, Office of The President and Vice President

It comes with deep honor to recognize Chief Mark Fischer, as student advocate of the year—a person who is unique in his own shoes and serve with a great sense of pride. In his role as Chief of Public Safety, Mark Fischer has gone above and beyond the normal to ensure students had access to a quality of life and are safe on this campus. Through his actions, he has exemplified the spirit of Ever Better we thrive for and have protected this community with the utmost respect.

Chief Fischer made it possible for students to bring their ideas to the department and see them come to fruition—he made it possible for students to have a role within the department. Chief Fischer valued student engagement and getting feedback. He worked closely with students to implement a Student Advisory Board to the Department of Public Safety. More than valuing input, he found creative ways to implement them. Chief Fischer without a doubt implemented campus-wide cruiser lights on patrol vehicles to increase visibility and promote safety amongst the department. Chief Fischer hosted Coffee and Cookies with the Chief as an opportunity to connect with students and to get feedback on the department’s work and new initiatives, such as an on-campus ambulance. Chief Fischer and his team constantly showed up and was vigilant in many aspects of the campus community. His team even took necessary measures to include students in the trainings of new officers. The Students’ Association Government is grateful to have worked with Chief Fischer during the Walk for Light Initiative to help increase lighting and safety on campus.

Thank you, Chief Fischer, for your hard work, relentless commitment, invaluable contributions, and most importantly—your love for this community. For all the work you have done, even when it cut into your personal time, you deserved to be the student advocate of the year.

About the Award

The Students’ Association Student Life Advocate of the Year Award was established in 2011 to call attention to the reality that learning is not limited to the classroom.  The award is given annually to recognize a member of the University staff who provides guidance and support through devotion to growth and education of students, dedication to developing relationships and partnerships with students and/or student organizations, as well as exemplifying outstanding qualities of character and commitment.
