Andre Tulloch

Andrew Fried Prize

Andre Tulloch

Presented by Marcy Kraus, Executive Director of the College Center for Advising Services and Dean of First Year Students

Marcy has served as an administrator on campus , working with students as an academic advisor, for twenty-eight years.

As an administrator who has been a member of the UR community for many years, I talk with students every day about their academic goals and their plans for the future. It’s an endlessly interesting and educational experience for me, and my conversations often lead me to reflect on the experiences that our students share with our campus community. When reading Andre’s personal statement, I was particularly struck by his introductory remarks: “My main goals as I stepped onto the campus last fall were to have a larger impact on those around me, to forge a way for students who look like me to come here in the future, and to speak my truth, regardless of the implications .” With those words, Andre has truly captured his remarkable first year of college.

As president of the 2023 Class Council and as a Senator for the Student Association, Andre has focused his efforts on a wide variety of initiatives such as waiving lab fees for high need students, advocating for students with disabilities, and leading his class council in creating a year-long series of initiatives to promote class spirit and help first year students build connections with the broader campus community. In addition to these efforts, he has worked tirelessly during the past year to reinvigorate the campus First Generation Society as a means of celebrating and supporting first generation and low-income students. In the words of his recommender, Andre has a deep interest in justice and discrimination. She notes that [Andre] “has been faced with challenging circumstances on campus that reflect…the political polarity in the country….Despite the challenges, he has been a calm voice of reason and peacemaking amidst the conflicts.”

To his peers, and to the administrators who know him on campus, Andre has already made a significant impact. He is dedicated to serving others and to uplifting his fellow students. He is a positive role model who has worked hard to make a difference. Please join me in congratulating Andre Tulloch on his recognition as this year’s recipient of the Andrew Norman Fried Prize.
